The crime of Human Trafficking has come into global recognition for many reasons, one being the multi-faceted nature of the crime which provides a shock value to most who hear the most horrific cases. Because of this covert nature, Human Trafficking can be considered as no discriminator of persons. Victims range from upper-class suburban individuals to impoverished vulnerable individuals in developing nations. Similarly, the perpetrators of these crimes come from all ages and backgrounds. One surprising case is that of 17 year old twin brothers who had been pimping young girls in the south suburbs of Chicago. Such a case brings many questions to mind, but the one that rings prominently in my head is the question of prevention. What could have been done for these young men earlier in their lives to keep them from believing that selling the bodies of other humans was a rational, right, or acceptable thing to do? Who could have played a role in their lives to teach them to discern right and wrong? What could have keep them from going the route that eventually took them to act out in this way? Lives have been broken because of their actions, but none can deny that these young men must have come from deep brokeness themselves if this crime was something they became involved in at such a young age. So the question remains - how do we prevent this in our nation, our region, our community, and our homes?
